WOVEN SLIT FILM GEOTEXTILES
Carthage Mills’ FX® Series of woven slit film geotextiles offers immediate and cost effective solutions for most separation and many stabilization applications. By providing and maintaining separation of the aggregate and subgrade soils, the system life of both paved and unpaved roadways is extended significantly.
In unpaved applications, the aggregate remains useful throughout the entire life of the job, and access to work sites remains trouble free through all types of weather. Stabilization is provided primarily by their high strength at low elongation that distributes loads and reduces or eliminates rutting.
Most all types of geotextiles are excellent separators of aggregate and subgrade. However, only ‘woven’ geotextiles have the high modulus – resistance to stretch – necessary to provide stabilization over soft or poorly drained soils.
Nonwoven geotextile fabrics are often referred to as ‘multipurpose’, and to a great degree deliver on that promise. Contributing to their popularity is their cost-of-manufacture to weight ratio is less than their woven counterparts. The manufacturing process of nonwoven geotextiles is very different from that of woven geotextiles, with needlepunched finishing as the leader. When used in filtration applications it is important to note that the actual mechanics of this function by nonwoven geotextiles are much different than the original woven monofilaments.
Non-woven geotextiles consist of fibers that are either continuous filament yarns or short staple fibers which are then bonded together by various processes that can include a needling process that intertwines the fibers physically (needle punched), or a chemical / thermal bonding operation that fuses adjacent fibers together. The resulting non-woven geotextiles have a random fiber orientation with high porosity and permeability, indirect and unpredictable openings, a thickness ranging from thick felt to a relatively thin fabric, and low modulus with high elongation.
WOVEN MONOFILAMENT GEOTEXTILES
Only woven monofilament geotextiles can provide ‘long-term’ solutions for nearly any drainage / filtration application, thus making them the filter fabric of choice for bulkheads, subsurface drainage systems and under hard armor.
Effective levels of Percent Open Area (POA), a property found critical to long-term filtration is unique to woven monofilaments. Values ≥4% indicate that a sufficient quantity of distinct, measurable, uniform and unidirectional paths through the fabric exist to allow for the release of troublesome migrating fines – the nemesis of all other filter fabrics, regardless of where they approach the geotextile.
This allows for the formation of a mini-graded ‘filter cake’ against the surface of the free-flowing ‘filter fabric’, and is the designers’ only insurance against long-term clogging of their filtration systems.
HIGH PERFORMANCE WOVEN GEOTEXTILES
The Carthage Mills’ FX®–MF and TF High-Performance Series of woven polypropylene geotextiles were developed to deliver the higher strengths and long-term performance that cannot be achieved by typical woven slit-film geotextiles.
The FX®–MF and TF High-Performance Series of woven polypropylene geotextiles are produced of 100% high-tenacity polypropylene yarns. Utilizing a variety of unique weave patterns, they are designed for separation, stabilization and reinforcement, while still providing excellent filtration and drainage in a wide range of applications from moderate to severe site conditions.
Whether the emphasis is on filtration, high tensile properties, and/or long-term performance, these versatile and durable geotextiles can provide quick and easy solutions to other costly alternatives.
HIGH STRENGTH WOVEN GEOTEXTILES
Carthage Mills’ FX® High-Strength (PET) Series of woven polyester geotextiles were developed for the most demanding applications of reinforcement and confinement.
The FX® High-Strength Series (PET) is produced of 100% high-tenacity, high molecular weight, multifilament filament polyester (PET) yarns. They deliver the higher ultimate tensile strength properties, resistance to installation damage, and exceptional creep resistance and soil interaction that results in higher long-term design strengths (LTDS) per GRI-GT7.
Carthage Mills can custom manufacture FX® High-Strength (PET) geotextiles to meet individual project specifications up to approximately 55,000 lbs/ft Ultimate Tensile; in custom roll sizes; and with minimal lead times meeting difficult delivery requirements.
